Can Gummy Smiles Be Fixed?

Most people think of a smile as teeth alone—but the gums play just as big a role in how a smile looks. If you’ve ever felt self-conscious because your smile shows more gum than you’d like, you’re not imagining things. Gummy smiles are common, and yes—they can be treated. At CarolinasDentist at North Carolina, our team works with patients to create natural-looking smiles that match both their features and their goals.

What Causes a Gummy Smile?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. A gummy smile can be the result of several factors: excess gum tissue, short teeth, a hyperactive upper lip, or even the way your jawbone developed. Sometimes it’s a mix of these. The good news? Once we understand the cause, there are multiple ways to treat it.

Treatment Options That Fit the Cause

If the issue is extra gum tissue, a gentle laser reshaping procedure—called gum contouring—can make a big difference. This quick treatment exposes more of your natural teeth, instantly balancing your smile.

If short teeth or worn edges are part of the problem, we might talk about veneers or bonding to restore proportion. For patients whose gummy smile comes from how the lip or jaw moves, more advanced options, like Botox or surgical correction, may be appropriate. It all depends on your unique anatomy and what you want to achieve.

It’s Not Just About Looks—It’s About Confidence

Most people seeking treatment for a gummy smile aren’t doing it for a dramatic change. They just want their smile to feel more balanced. And when that happens, confidence tends to follow. Patients often tell us they finally feel at ease smiling for photos, speaking in public, or just laughing without hesitation. That shift—subtle as it may seem—can be incredibly meaningful.
