Your smile is our first priority at CarolinasDentist, and we’ll give you something to smile about with our next-level cleaning services.

Gum Disease Treatment

A healthy mouth is more than just a fantastic smile. Your gums need care, too. Gum disease has been linked to a variety of other health issues including heart disease and diabetes. If you have red, swollen, bleeding, or receding gums (or if you have bad breath or loose teeth), then you may have gum disease.

We have different gum disease treatments available depending on the severity of your case. Two of these include professional dental cleanings as well as scaling and root planing (removing plaque and tartar from around the gum line and then smoothing rough spots).

Oral Cancer Screening

Comprehensive oral cancer screenings are offered to ensure early detection and prevention. At CarolinasDentist, our team will keep a keen-eye on your teeth and gums and utilized advanced techniques to thoroughly examine the mouth, promoting proactive oral health and well-being.

Deep Cleaning FAQs

Gum disease is frequently caused by poor oral hygiene. However, it can be caused and influenced by many other factors, like genetics, hormone changes, smoking, and taking certain medications. Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease, and we always want to help patients reverse gum disease early on when it is still completely reversible. If your gum disease has progressed into periodontitis, we can help you keep your teeth and gums as clean and healthy as possible.

Periodontal deep cleanings are usually performed when plaque and tartar begin to collect below the gumline as well as above it. When this happens, gum pockets form, and these pockets need to be cleaned to avoid things like tooth loss, tooth decay, and gum recession. If your gums are very red, sensitive, and look puffy, it may be because a deep cleaning is required to maintain your gum health. Our team would be happy to assess your smile and make a personalized recommendation for you.

One of the best ways to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible is by practicing great oral hygiene at home and visiting our office at least twice per year for routine cleanings and dental exams. If you smoke or chew tobacco, quitting or reducing these habits can also greatly improve your oral health as well as your overall health. For specific questions regarding your unique oral health journey, we recommend scheduling a visit with our team.

A deep dental cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, goes beyond a routine cleaning to treat gum disease. We carefully remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline, where bacteria tend to collect. The tooth roots are then smoothed to help the gums reattach and heal. Deep cleanings help reduce inflammation, control infection, and create a healthier environment for your gums to recover.

Common signs of gum disease include red, swollen, or tender gums that may bleed when brushing or flossing. You might also notice persistent bad breath, gum recession, or teeth that feel loose. In some cases, there may be little to no pain, which is why regular dental visits are important. Early detection allows us to treat gum disease before it becomes more serious and advanced.

The earliest stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis, and it can often be reversed with professional care and improved home hygiene. Once it progresses to periodontitis, it cannot be completely cured but can be effectively managed. With the right treatments and consistent maintenance, we can help control the infection, reduce symptoms, and prevent further damage to your gums and supporting bone.

Treatment depends on the severity of your condition, and we sometimes combine a variety of services to create your ideal, custom treatment plan. In addition to deep cleanings, we may also apply a topical antibiotic called Arestin into the gum pockets to fight bacteria for weeks after your appointment. Your dentist may recommend Perio Protect trays to deliver medication directly to infected areas at home as well. These combined approaches help manage infection and promote healthier gums over time.

Victoria did an excellent job in my in-depth cleaning today. She was very caring of my needs and was super fun to talk with. The best part was she gave me a blanket to cuddle in until my cleaning was done 🙂 Dr. Zukerman is very knowledgeable and explain procedures very clearly. The staff is transparent about the finances before the procedure and offer competitive rates. They definitely earned a lifelong patient here. Truly felt taken care of during my time in the clinic!
