Preventing Plaque
Everyone knows it’s important to prevent plaque from building up in your mouth. But what exactly is plaque?
Plaque is a sticky film that forms on teeth. It is caused by bacteria in the mouth that produce waste products as they break down sugars. Plaque causes cavities and tooth decay, and eventually turns into tartar, which is not only unsightly but can also hurt your gums. Everyone has a certain amount of plaque, but it’s important to keep yours under control. Read on to discover easy ways to keep plaque in check.
9 Ways to Prevent Plaque Buildup
1. Brush regularly and vigorously. The best way to fight against plaque is to stop it from forming in the first place. If you stick to a regular tooth brushing schedule, you won’t give plaque any time to get settled.
2. Make sure you’re using a soft toothbrush, and replace your toothbrush every few months. Your toothbrush might look okay after using it for six months, but the truth is it’s not as effective in fighting plaque.
3. Use an electric toothbrush if you want to go the extra mile. There are many types to choose from and your dentist can give you their personal recommendation.
4. Make sure to use tartar-control toothpaste with fluoride if your tap water isn’t already fluoridated. There is also special fluoridated mouthwash you can buy.
5. Floss like nobody’s watching! But seriously, also floss like your dentist is always watching. We know many people aren’t fans of flossing, but it’s incredibly important in the fight against plaque.
6. Choose a good mouthwash to use every night before bed. If you actually like your mouthwash, you’re way more likely to use it. Don’t be afraid to try a few different ones before settling on a favorite.
7. Watch your diet! Stay away from sweets, sodas, and juice drinks since bacteria thrive in sugary environments.
8. Limit snacks between meals because those sugars and bacteria they attract will just be hanging around your mouth until you next brush your teeth.
9. If you smoke, quit. Smoking is not just dangerous for your heart and lungs, but it actually messes with your dental health and can cause much bigger health problems down the line.
Remember, it’s better to be proactive about preventing plaque rather than having to deal with removing it down the line.
