What Do Deep Cleanings Accomplish?

If you’ve been told you need a deep cleaning, you might wonder what makes it different from a routine cleaning. Deep cleanings, also known as scaling and root planing, are an essential treatment for gum disease. If your dentist or hygienist has recommended a deep cleaning, you might wonder why it’s necessary and how it helps your oral health. Let’s explore what deep cleanings accomplish and why they’re so important.

    1. What is a Deep Cleaning?

A deep cleaning is not just about cleaning the surface of your teeth—it addresses the areas below the gumline where harmful bacteria, plaque, and tartar have accumulated. These deposits can cause gum inflammation and, over time, lead to gum disease, which threatens the health of your teeth and gums.

    2. What Happens During a Deep Cleaning?

Biofilm and Tartar Removal: Your dental hygienist focuses on eliminating the sticky biofilm (plaque) and hardened bacteria (tartar or calculus) from the tooth surfaces and beneath the gumline. This step is critical for reducing inflammation and removing the environment where harmful bacteria thrive.

Promoting Healing: By removing these irritants, deep cleanings allow your gums to heal and reattach to the teeth. This helps reduce pocket depths, where bacteria tend to accumulate.

Stopping Disease Progression: Addressing gum inflammation early with a deep cleaning can prevent more severe forms of gum disease and the need for more invasive treatments in the future.

    3. What Do Deep Cleanings Accomplish?

Reduce Gum Inflammation: Plaque biofilm and tartar irritate the gums, causing redness and swelling. Removing these bacteria reduces inflammation and helps gums return to a healthier state.

Promote Gum Reattachment: By clearing away harmful bacteria, deep cleanings allow gums to heal and reattach to the teeth, reducing pocket depth around the gums.

Prevent Tooth Loss: Gum disease can weaken the structures that support your teeth. Deep cleanings help protect those structures and lower the risk of tooth loss.

Freshen Breath: Bacteria beneath the gumline often contribute to chronic bad breath. Deep cleanings eliminate odor-causing bacteria, leaving your mouth fresher.

Support Overall Health: Treating gum disease doesn’t just benefit your mouth—it also reduces the risk of complications linked to systemic conditions like heart disease and diabetes.
