In this post, discover how your dentist can help with jaw clenching—from spotting the signs to providing lasting relief.
You’re Starting Invisalign; Now What?

Starting Invisalign is an exciting step toward a straighter, healthier smile. But once you’ve got those clear aligners in hand, you might be wondering what happens next. How do you care for them? How often should you wear them? What’s normal—and what’s not?
As a Diamond Plus Invisalign provider, CarolinasDentist has helped thousands of patients across North Carolina navigate their Invisalign journey with confidence. Here’s what you should know as you get started.
1. Wear Your Aligners 20–22 Hours a Day
This part is key: Invisalign only works if you wear it consistently. That means aligners should be in your mouth for at least 20 to 22 hours a day—basically anytime you’re not eating, drinking (anything other than water), or brushing your teeth.
Skipping time here and there can slow down your progress or lead to discomfort when switching to your next set.
2. Stick to the Change Schedule
Your provider will give you a timeline for when to switch to your next set of aligners—usually every 1–2 weeks. Set reminders if needed. Sticking to the schedule helps ensure that your teeth are moving safely and steadily.
3. Keep Aligners (And Your Teeth) Clean
You’ll want to clean your aligners at least twice a day—ideally when you brush your teeth. Use a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic. Specialized Invisalign cleaning crystals or denture tablets can help keep aligners clear and odor-free.
Pro tip: Always brush before putting aligners back in. Trapping food or sugar under the trays can lead to decay or staining.
4. Expect a Little Pressure—And Maybe a Lisp
It’s normal to feel some pressure when you start a new set of aligners. That’s a sign they’re working. You might also notice a slight lisp in the first few days, especially with certain sounds. Most people adjust quickly.
If you’re experiencing sharp pain or something doesn’t feel right, contact your dental office—it’s better to check than tough it out.
5. Store Aligners Safely
Anytime you remove your aligners, put them in their case. Leaving them wrapped in a napkin is the fastest way to lose them. Pets, by the way, love chewing on them—so don’t leave them within reach.
If you do lose a tray, call your dentist as soon as possible to figure out your next step.
6. Track Your Progress and Stay on Top of Appointments
You’ll likely have check-ins every 6–10 weeks depending on your case. These visits help your provider ensure everything’s on track—and adjust if needed. Taking photos or using the Invisalign app can also be a great way to track progress between visits.
