How to Keep Kids on Their Dental Routine Over Summer Break

Summer offers a welcome break from rigid schedules—but with that freedom, daily routines can shift quickly. At CarolinasDentist, which has 14 locations across North Carolina, we often see a drop in consistent oral hygiene habits during this time of year. With a few thoughtful adjustments, parents can help kids maintain strong brushing habits without disrupting summer plans.

Structure Still Matters—Even in the Off-Season

During the school year, brushing and flossing often align naturally with the day’s structure. But once summer arrives, those cues disappear. Mornings start later, bedtimes stretch out, and brushing gets pushed aside more easily.

One helpful approach is to anchor brushing and flossing to other regular activities, such as meals or getting ready for bed. Keep supplies visible and accessible, especially for younger children. Even simple changes—like using a toothpaste flavor your child likes—can support consistency.

For a fun twist, consider adding brushing and flossing to your child’s summer bucket list or weekly goals chart. Whether it’s alongside reading challenges or park visits, seeing those stickers or checkmarks build up reinforces the habit in a fun, low-pressure way. Pairing dental routines with other summer fun—like library visits or backyard adventures—helps keep oral care part of the daily rhythm.

Lead by Example and Reinforce the Routine

Children of all ages respond to modeled behavior. Brushing together, even occasionally, reinforces the importance of daily hygiene. A timer or short song can help ensure brushing lasts the recommended two minutes. Summer is also a good time to check toothbrushes for wear and replace them if needed.

Watch for Summer-Specific Dental Pitfalls

Summer often brings more snacking, sugary drinks, and frozen treats. All that sugar creates more opportunities for cavities to develop, especially if brushing habits slip. Encourage water over sugary drinks and limit sticky, slow-to-dissolve treats. If your child becomes ill and requires medication, especially in liquid form, remember to brush afterward. Many of these medicines contain sugars that can linger on teeth overnight.

Stay Consistent, Even When Traveling

Vacations and weekend trips can disrupt routines, but dental habits shouldn’t be left behind. Pack everything your child needs—brush, floss, fluoride toothpaste—and encourage them to stick with their morning and evening routines, even away from home. A consistent habit, regardless of location, helps reinforce that oral health isn’t just a school-year responsibility.
