Signs That You Might Have Periodontitis

stages of periodontal disease

Gum health is just as important as tooth health, yet many people don’t notice gum disease until it’s advanced. Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages soft tissue and bone, leading to tooth loss if left untreated. The good news? Catching it early makes treatment easier and more effective.

At CarolinasDentist, we want to help you recognize the warning signs of periodontitis so you can take action before it becomes a bigger problem.

    1. Bleeding Gums

Healthy gums shouldn’t bleed when you brush or floss. Occasional bleeding might not seem like a big deal, but persistent bleeding is often the first sign of gum disease. If you see pink in the sink, your gums could be inflamed—a key warning sign of early periodontitis.

    2. Persistent Bad Breath

No amount of gum or mints will cover up bad breath caused by gum disease. Bacteria trapped in deep gum pockets release toxins, leading to chronic bad breath that won’t go away with regular brushing or mouthwash.

    3. Gum Recession

Do your teeth look longer than they used to? That’s likely due to receding gums, a key indicator of periodontitis. As gums pull away, they expose more of the tooth’s root, making them more sensitive and vulnerable to decay.

    4. Swollen, Red, or Tender Gums

Gums should be firm and pink. If they look puffy, dark red, or feel sore, it could be a sign of infection. Inflammation is your body’s way of responding to harmful bacteria. If the swelling doesn’t go away, it’s time to visit a dentist.

    5. Loose or Shifting Teeth

If your teeth feel loose or wobbly, that’s a major red flag. Periodontitis weakens the supporting bone and tissues, which can lead to teeth shifting or even falling out. If your bite feels different, it’s time to get checked.

When to See a Dentist

If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t wait. Periodontitis is progressive, meaning it won’t go away on its own. The earlier you seek treatment, the better your chances of stopping the disease before it leads to permanent damage.

Your dentist can help by performing a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), providing customized treatments like Perio Protect therapy, prescribing antibacterial treatments like Arestin, or, in severe cases, recommending surgical options.
