How Genetics Can Negatively Impact Your Oral Health

genetics and oral hygiene, genes, oral health

Did you know your family tree could be branching out into your dental care? Genetics play a big part in our oral health, and being in the know about your genetic background can be just as important as brushing and flossing. Let’s dive into how your DNA might be affecting your smile and why it’s super important for your dentist to get the full picture of your health history.

It’s All in the Genes: The Resilience of Teeth and Gums

Ever wonder why some people are cavity-prone while others aren’t? Well, it could come down to what you’ve inherited from your folks. From how tough your enamel is to your gum’s health, genes have a say. And if your saliva’s more laid-back in its acid-fighting job, that’s a genetic memo too. While we can’t rewrite our DNA, your dentist can help you create a game plan to tackle these genetic curveballs.

Jaw Shape, Tooth Size, and Alignment: More Than Meets the Eye

Those family traits can also influence how your teeth decide to line up in your mouth, potentially leading to a crooked smile or a tight squeeze. This isn’t just about looks—teeth that are out of line are tougher to clean, upping the chance for unwanted dental parties (and by parties, we mean cavities and plaque). Your immune system’s ability to fight off mouth invaders can also be a hereditary hand-me-down. But fear not, your dentist has the know-how to spot issues and get you on a path to a healthier mouth. Did you know, CarolinasDentist is a Diamond Plus Invisalign provider?
